VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION OF DECONTEXTUALIZED HERITAGE:

THE CASE OF THE CATHEDRAL OF GIRONA

The case of the Cathedral of Girona, is widely known in the architectural environment for the controversy that developed about the convenience or not of a single nave or three main naves .  The conclave convened in 1416 to decide how to continue its construction is a unique case of a well-documented Congress of Gothic architects, which has generated a great deal of literature and controversy. The original masonry, now completely dismantled, is believed to have been made between 1351-1353, and its authorship is linked to Maestre Aloy de Montbrai, of French origin, and Maestro Ferrer, of Spanish origin .

This Project describes the construction of a virtual and hyperrealistic immersive model of the missing ensemble and its original context. The geometric and luminic integration of both models is shown in a self-developed application and different scenes built by means of its use are exemplified. The proposal allows the interactive visualization of the complex by switching between its current and original states. The possibility of consulting additional information on certain singular elements, now disappeared or decontextualized, in the very location for which they were originally conceived, aims to promote their study and dissemination. It will also make it possible to establish hypotheses about their original design, use and configuration, ultimately promoting the conservation of architectural heritage that would otherwise remain forgotten.

The virtual application makes it possible to contemplate the missing choir by recovering the dispersed and grouped elements for an interactive experience of virtual walk in decontextualized heritage.
